A living room refresh

When designing my living room, I gave myself permission to go slow and let it come together organically. And layer by layer it has come together, where we started with refinishing the floors, then paneling and painting the walls, adding a mantel, then new lighting, then reupholstering our vintage sofa and vintage chairs, then a new coffee table and rug, and window treatments. Yet, it still wasn’t feeling quite done. So, when SWD Studio reached out about a pillow refresh, I knew it was going to be the final missing piece to making this space officially done.

When selecting pillows, I like to vary up scale of pattern, texture, and colour to really make it feel cohesive. Here, I knew I was dealing with a few existing fabrics that I needed to work around: an olive velvet sofa, light blue woven chairs, a medium scale grid on the rug, and a blockprint on the curtains. So, any new textiles needed to each feel a missing piece of the puzzle. Here’s what we added:

1. A large scale floral print in a navy, lilac and olive colourway

This Indian Arbre pillow is amazing and pulled together the navy from the dining room chairs, the lilac from the settee in the adjacent seating area and the olive from the sofa. It’s a large enough scale so it doesn’t compete with the curtains and it’s the only colourful textile in the space.

2. A textural small scale neutral print

The Betwixt pillows add a soft texture in a palette that ties into the rug and curtains. It’s a small scale pattern so it doesn’t compete in the space and draws your eye up from the rug.

3. A solid white pillow with olive piping

I love adding a small lumbar to the sofa to break up the symmetry of the pillows and this Solid Linen pillow with Silk Piping is the perfect addition to carry the colour story without adding more pattern.

4. A navy velvet and white linen lumbar

The blue armchairs have always felt like they needed a lumbar pillow, but I didn’t want to add another pattern and I love how the Lindsay Lumbar perfectly connects the living room to the dining room by carrying the navy across the two spaces while still allowing the chairs to shine. By the way, these can be made in a ton of different colours to fit perfectly into any space.

I am loving how much more cohesive this space finally feels, and all it took was some gorgeous designer pillows from SWD Studio. And, you can use ERIN20 at checkout for 20% off your own pillows, valid only for the next week.
